The similarities are numerous, such as the similar instrumentation and the effective use of the \"Day of Wrath\" motif in both pieces, and both are substantial works with exquisite orchestrations. Nevertheless, one wonders what Rachmaninoff's intentions were in not giving his last work, the \"Symphonic Dances,\" the title \"Symphony No. 4. Rachmaninoff, who had intended to give each movement a subtitle, may have preferred the free form of the piece. As usual, Kitayenko's performance was firm and solid, and he pulled each piece along with him. There are few \"intoxicating melodies\" like in the Second Symphony, but the way the orchestra makes the listener sing along and gets to the heart of the music is a true testament to its quality.
