Based on a poem by Nikolaus Lenau, it portrays the legendary figure “Don Juan” through Strauss’s characteristic, colorful orchestration, offering listeners a profound sense of satisfaction. In contrast, the symphony is an early work from his youth. While glimpses of Strauss’s characteristic style can be seen, he had not yet fully developed his own distinctive personality—a fact that, in a way, makes the piece all the more endearing. Although it was harshly criticized by Brahms at its premiere, it seems to have been well-received by the audience; however, it gradually fell into obscurity, and today there are few opportunities to hear it.
