Don Juan,\" written by Strauss (1864-1949) at the age of 24, is expressive music based on a poem by Nikolaus Renau. Everything is easy to understand and it is one of the most popular of his symphonic poems. As for \"Life of a Hero,\" it needs no further explanation, but I did find one interesting description in the booklet. Indeed, the work ends with a \"Retreat and Completion\" and not a \"Funeral March. There are also plenty of quotations from Strauss's own works, and some people are upset that he would compare himself to a \"hero\" in such an irreverent manner. Some may resent the comparison, but the grandiose autobiography of the hero, a hero who will continue to evolve, will overwhelm all listeners. Speaking of Jansons' \"Life of a Hero,\" it is no doubt that it is one of his favorite and beloved pieces, so much so that this piece was included in the program of his first visit to Japan with the Concertgebouw.Conversely, it is a wonder why the recording with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra has not been released before. This performance is actually from 2011, and the reason it has never been released on CD must have been because they were waiting for the \"Strauss Year\" of 2014. The music is well controlled, the sound is thick, and the interpretation is convincing. The power of the music never ceases, even as the piece nears its end, and it grows ever brighter and more powerful as it moves toward its conclusion. What will people think as the sublime and mysterious final chords fade away?
