Although his name is rarely heard today, he was a significant figure in 20th-century Yugoslavian music. He studied at the Zagreb Academy of Music and gained fame as a pianist. He formed duos with numerous performers and taught many students.\nWhen listening to his works—such as the “Sonatina for Piano”—one might initially sense a sound reminiscent of the “French Impressionists,” but as the piece progresses, the sense of harmony becomes more subtle, and the music grows increasingly supple. If you compare “Theme and Variations,” which belongs to his early period, with the “Piano Sonata” from his later years, you may notice that the sonata, on the contrary, exudes a more refined beauty. He composed only a handful of works for piano, and this album contains all of them. For that reason, a violin sonata has been included to fill the remaining space; this piece, too, possesses a flowing beauty that seems to build upon the legacy of Fauré.
