Whether he plays the opening of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto at a painfully slow tempo or performs Ravel’s “Gaspard de la Nuit” in a deliberately unsettling manner, his style is truly unique. Naturally, this two-disc set is also a veritable feast of “originality.” Though it’s a collection themed around Paganini, it features a lineup of truly diabolical music. First, let’s start with the familiar “La Campanella.” Lutosławski sounds cooler than you’d imagine (surprise!), and then there’s Rachmaninoff, with Eschenbach’s conducting adding even more fuel to that demonic intensity.
