With that in mind, there are plenty of discoveries to be made not only in the First Sonata but in the other sonatas as well. This is a Beethoven (1770–1827) who seems to be chuckling to himself. In stark contrast, the two late sonatas on CD 2 are solemn and profound. The enigmatic expression in the third movement of the “Harm Klaviere” is nothing short of magnificent.
