Late on the night of August 20, the day before this performance, the “Czechoslovak Crisis” (the Prague Spring) erupted when the Warsaw Pact forces, led by the Soviet Union, breached the Czech border and placed the entire territory of Czechoslovakia under occupation. An eerie tension filled the Royal Albert Hall, and the atmosphere was on the verge of exploding. It is possible that the members of the Russian State Symphony Orchestra had not heard the news reports, but in any case, the performance was interrupted just a few measures in by the confused murmurings of the audience. However, conductor Svetlanov boldly continued the performance, delivering what is arguably the finest performance of his entire career. It is said that when his widow later listened to this test recording, the shock of that night came flooding back to her, and she wept bitterly. The two bonus tracks are live recordings from the BBC Proms, which went ahead despite the turbulent times.\nNaxos Japan\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"ICA Classics","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":53595445133601,"sku":"4562240271368","price":2690.0,"currency_code":"JPY","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0568\/8482\/2076\/files\/4562240271368.jpg?v=1790481142","url":"https:\/\/cdsvinyljapan.com\/products\/4562240271368","provider":"CDs Vinyl Japan Store","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
