Originally a simple work accompanied only by a string ensemble and organ, it is known for having later been enhanced with the addition of trumpets and timpani, which added to its splendor. The piece itself has a crisp, clear sound, and its straightforward melodies resonate deeply with listeners. Gounod’s work, on the other hand, is a beautiful composition imbued with the rich, full-bodied music of the Romantic era. Gounod is best known for his opera *Faust*, but that came after he had already achieved success as a musician; in his youth, he was a deeply devout man who even aspired to become a priest. In Paris at that time, Mass was celebrated on November 22, “St. Cecilia’s Day,” and this piece was composed for that occasion; it features music even more beautiful than the famous Bach-Gounod “Ave Maria.” Although it is typically structured in seven movements, this performance—just when it seems it will end quietly with the *Agnus Dei*—adds three *Domine Salve* movements in accordance with the liturgical calendar. These sections are titled “Prayer for the Church,” “Prayer for the Army,” and “Prayer for the Nation,” respectively. It is said that at the time of the original performance, a hymn praising Napoleon was sung during the “Prayer for the Army,” but today the lyrics have been changed to reflect a more universal prayer.\nAs for Jansson’s performance here, it is, as always, polished to the finest detail, allowing listeners to fully savor both Schubert’s simplicity and Gounod’s brilliance. Orgonassova’s majestic soprano voice might seem a bit too grand for Schubert, but in Gounod’s work, she displays a power that seems to rival the orchestra itself. Elsner, whose beautiful voice shines in the “Sanctus,” is also superb.\nNaxos Japan\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"BR Klassik","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":53595632697633,"sku":"4562240270927","price":3090.0,"currency_code":"JPY","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0568\/8482\/2076\/files\/4562240270927.jpg?v=1790482031","url":"https:\/\/cdsvinyljapan.com\/products\/4562240270927","provider":"CDs Vinyl Japan Store","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
