Born in Kanazawa, she studied at the Toho Music School for Children and Toho Girls' Senior High School before graduating from Toho Gakuen School of Music. In 1995 she won fifth prize at the 13th International Chopin Piano Competition. In 1996, on completing the postgraduate course at Toho Gakuen, she gave debut recitals at Suntory Hall in Tokyo and Izumi Hall in Osaka, and she has appeared with all of Japan's leading orchestras. She received the 23rd Japan Chopin Association Award and the New Artist Prize at the 9th Hida-Furukawa Music Awards. Her teachers have included Sadako Matsuoka, Andrzej Jasiński, Piotr Paleczny, Halina Czerny-Stefańska and Takahiro Sonoda. Abroad she has given recitals at the Salle Pleyel (Salle Chopin) in Paris, Schloss Grafenegg near Vienna, the Warsaw Philharmonic Hall in Poland and Nové Město in the Czech Republic. She has been invited to the Duszniki International Chopin Festival, to concerts in four Polish cities in 1999 marking the 150th anniversary of Chopin's death, to concerts in 2002 in two Polish and four Spanish cities under the auspices of the Japan Foundation, and to a Japan-China friendship concert in Suzhou, China. She appeared with the Leipzig String Quartet in 2001, 2004 and 2009, and in the \"B→C\" series at Tokyo Opera City in 2004. Her activities are wide-ranging: school visits in her native Ishikawa since 2005, the premiere of a new work by Toshiya Sukegawa in 2006, and the piano duo Duo Grace with the pianist Takako Takahashi since 2006. Her recital series \"Chopin's Journey with Rika Miyatani\" ran for ten years, from 2001 to 2010. In 2010 she appeared with the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra under Leoš Svárovský, and in 2011 she took the role of Chopin in \"Alice's Musical Journey\" at the Nissay Theatre. She has also served on the jury of the Chopin competition organised by the Japan Chopin Association in 2005 and 2010.\nIn 2008 she published her first book, \"Rikarin Drops In: A Pianist's Kaleidoscope\".
