Now, a collection of masterful performances has arrived all at once to quench a long-standing thirst. All of these recordings make full use of his trusted Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra (formerly of East Germany). The high quality of recording technology from the former East German era is truly impressive. As demonstrated in his Bruckner performances, his approach is fundamentally brisk and lighthearted. He allows the woodwinds to soar freely while pursuing lyricism. Yet, the fact that he avoids excessive sentimentality reveals the maestro’s intelligence and sharp insight.\nSymphony No. 2 is a masterpiece favored by Münsch, Böhm, and Preetl; though an early work, it is a fine example of Romantic music. Symphony No. 6 is sometimes referred to as the “Little C Major,” yet it, too, displays a majestic presence. The “Unfinished” Symphony is a live recording from after the reunification of East and West Germany. Here, it is performed at a slow tempo, conveying an expression of profound gravity. “The Great” is a brilliant performance that fully showcases Regner’s duality. One can only take one’s hat off to his sense of rhythm and narrative skill. The studio recording of the overture collection is also a rare recording. These works date from the period when Schubert was at the height of his compositional powers and are closely related to his symphonies. It is a real delight to hear “Five Minuets and Five German Dances for String Quartet, D. 89” performed by a string orchestra—a masterful display of the composer’s meticulous artistry. And the “German Dances” arranged by Webern are the highlight!
