Despite her fame, her recorded output is extremely limited; perhaps the single CD released by DG contains her entire catalog. Enthusiasts will likely be familiar with her recording of Reger’s Violin Concerto with Hauschild (AMATI). All of the repertoire featured here is being released for the first time. Born in Mainz, Germany, in 1937, Painemann began studying the violin at age four under his father, who was the concertmaster of the local orchestra. She later studied with Heinz Stanschke and Max Rostal. At age 19, he won first prize in a competition sponsored by the German Broadcasting Corporation (ARD), marking the start of his international career. In the United States, the great conductor George Szell held Paine-Mann in particularly high regard, leading to his appointment as soloist for the Cleveland Orchestra’s 1965 performance at Carnegie Hall in New York. From then on, he performed with conductors such as Münch, Solti, Karajan, Keilberth, Klips, Barbirolli, Kubelik, Tenshitt, and Martinon. In 1972, he participated as a soloist in the Munich Philharmonic’s first tour of Japan. Since the 1970s, he has placed greater emphasis on his educational activities, which may explain why he has not made many recordings as a performer. For this reason, this collection of famous concertos and renowned performances can be said to be a release that quenches a long-standing thirst. His artistic style is elegant and noble; his performances are entirely free of any unnecessary showmanship. One can only bow in admiration at the nobility of his Beethoven. His Mozart is a masterful performance rich in profound contemplation. His Brahms “F-sharp Major Sonata” is marked by intense sensitivity. And Schubert’s “Fantasy”—this highly free-spirited flight truly cleanses the soul. It’s also great news that many of the tracks feature backing by Demus, who could be called the god of piano accompaniment. Although all tracks are in mono, the high technical quality of Cologne Radio is well known to many discerning fans.
