His tone, too, was elusive and ever-changing—at times a rich, purely German sound, and at others a light, sparkling, Latin-inspired timbre—making him a master of infinite variety. Bruckner was a favorite part of his repertoire, yet even here, he never failed to surprise, revealing a completely different character with each performance. These are essential recordings in this set. The performances of the Fourth and Sixth Symphonies are thrilling and impossible to look away from. The Fifth Symphony features a fast tempo with a strong individual character, yet the overall interpretation remains orthodox. The Seventh Symphony is rendered with a soft and graceful touch. Symphonies No. 8 and No. 9 could be described as radical and shocking performances.
