In live performances, he captivated audiences with his richly varied, almost improvisational music, as well as his adaptability—changing his style as if he were a different person depending on the piece—and his professionalism. Yet, despite having ardent supporters during his lifetime, he could not be said to have enjoyed definitive fame. One reason for this is that many of his recordings (ETERNA) were studio recordings; due to their heavy reverberation, the intricate details—which required considerable artistry—were often obscured. Like Kegel, he began his career as a choral conductor; however, whereas Kegel’s approach was rooted in a fundamentally austere and unadorned musical style, Regner consistently maintained a cool perspective on works representative of the typical postwar German style, advancing the music with a flexible, light sound and changes that were frequent to the point of being almost neurotic. In this complete Brahms cycle—the kind we’ve long awaited—he pushes through at a breakneck pace rivaling that of Schuricht and Kleiber (especially in Symphonies Nos. 3 and 4), making one wonder if such speed is really appropriate; in Schoenberg’s “Verklärte Nacht” and “Pelléas,” his unhealthy, regressive tone strikes a chord, and his sensitive interpretation of the Chamber Symphony truly showcases the brilliance of a great conductor living through an age of anxiety. These are outstanding performances even among these works, for which there are few consistently excellent recordings.\nAfter German reunification, although it had been decided that he would return as music director of the Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra, the plan fell through due to a conspiracy; in his despair, his health gradually deteriorated, and he passed away. Had he lived, there is no doubt he would have continued to evolve and been hailed worldwide as the last of the great masters. This is a masterful album that truly showcases the full range of talent of Regner, a genius conductor who was buffeted by the tides of his time.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Weitblick","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":53595641282849,"sku":"4560250650487","price":5190.0,"currency_code":"JPY","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0568\/8482\/2076\/files\/4560250650487.jpg?v=1790482075","url":"https:\/\/cdsvinyljapan.com\/products\/4560250650487","provider":"CDs Vinyl Japan Store","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
