Although the performances of Nos. 35 and 39 were recorded in 2006 during his final visit to Japan, there is not a hint of slackness. This chamber-music-like intensity and tension is something he shares with Sándor Végh, who also came from a string background. As for the 1989 recordings of the 40th and 41st (“Jupiter”) symphonies, I am drawn to their purity—the complete absence of nostalgia or sentimentality.
