Description:

[The New York Philharmonic's Missing Link between Walter and Bernstein - A release commemorating the 125th anniversary of the birth of "Greek Philosopher" Mitropoulos. Dimitri Mitropoulos (1896-1960), a Greek-born conductor who made a name for himself throughout the world in the mid-20th century. To commemorate the 125th anniversary of his birth, we have assembled his stereo recordings of orchestral works made with the New York Philharmonic between 1957 and 1958 (five original LPs) on three SA-CD hybrid discs. During his tenure with the New York Philharmonic, Mitropoulos introduced a succession of Mahler symphonies, late Romanticism as represented by the New Vienna School, and major 20th century works into the orchestra's repertoire, providing a strong stimulus to the orchestra. He has been a strong inspiration to the Philharmonic Orchestra, and his silent pursuit of his own ideals, despite strong criticism from conservative media outlets, is a true example of a solitary existence. These recordings, made during the transition to Bernstein's successor, capture in vivid stereo Mitropoulos' spectacular and rigorous music-making, as if he were a man with a keen eye and a back to the audience. This is a series of Columbia recordings that began in 1940, and is a compilation of his best performances. ●Only in Japan ●Multi-case ●Remastered in 2021 ●Recording dates: February 24, November 11, April 22, 1957, and March 3, 1958 / Location: Columbia 30th Street Studios, New York City; Hotel St. George, Ballroom, Brooklyn, New York City.
