He grew up listening to a wide range of musical genres, including soul, blues, gospel, rock, and country. He taught himself to play the guitar and piano and performed on the streets and elsewhere. After graduating from high school, he moved to Clarksdale, Mississippi, where he participated in blues sessions almost every day. After enrolling at the University of Chicago, he was selected as the music director for Mitty Koria’s gospel choir. After graduating, he returned to Boston, and his 2008 album *Roll With You*, released on the indie label QDivision, became a global hit, leading to his first visit to Japan for Fuji Rock the following year. In 2010, she released her major-label debut, *Come And Get It!*, on Capitol, followed by *Nights Like This* on Warner in 2014.
