Description:
Good news for all you old guard! This is Furtwängler's original sound quality! Sticky strings and explosive timpani. The dark and profound tone of the "Ninth of Lucerne" TAHRA disc is back. The TAHRA version of "Lucerne Ninth" is back, with Furtwängler's own voice speaking of the Ninth! The live recording of "The Ninth in Lucerne," Furtwängler's last performance of the Ninth in his lifetime and considered one of the best in terms of performance and sound quality, has been newly remastered and reissued. The TAHARA disc, which was released officially with permission from Furtwängler's widow, was one of the first discs that made this magnificent performance known to the world. Later, AUDITE also issued a reissue of this recording, which attracted much attention, but the two labels had very different personalities. While the AUDITE disc has a beautifully arranged and transparent sound, the TAHRA disc is characterized by a soft and thick sound, and even has a throaty and terrible quality. The remastering has made these characteristics even more vivid. In a sense, for Furtwängler fans, this is the true Furtwängler. The TAHRA disc also includes Furtwängler's own voice speaking about the Ninth, which is very valuable and not available on other labels. As a special bonus only available on domestic pressings, a Japanese translation of this narration is also included in the commentary. The performance is awe-inspiring on a huge scale, but it is still a tremendous performance. The hazy sound at the beginning of the first movement, the strong contrast between the soft woodwinds and the sharp attack of the strings, the harsh but expansive timpani, the flexible tempo, everything is under Furtwängler's control, and he instantly pulls us into the music with his unmistakable charisma. The second movement, the Scherzo, is also spectacular, as if the music were crushing us. In the third movement, the tempo is slowed down dramatically, and a long, flowing song in praise of eternity continues without a moment's slackening. Then comes the finale chorus, which seems to shine light to the end of the world. It can only be described as divine. This is the ultimate performance of the "Ninth" by mankind. King International
