He served as Music Director of the Aachen Opera House—famous for its association with Karajan—until 1996, and in recent years has returned to Japan to focus on his conducting career there.\nThat said, as one would expect from Kitahara—who specializes in Shostakovich—the final movement of the “Revolution” Symphony is truly majestic. The recording features a “dead” on-mic sound reminiscent of the classic Mercury recordings, delivering tremendous power; I was shaken to the core by the final bass drum beat, which was played at a volume pushing the very limit of the recording level.
