Influenced by his father, an oud player, Albert was constantly exposed to the melodies of Arab music. He began playing saxophone at age 15 and entered the world of jazz in 1957 while serving in the military band. His exceptional abilities in composition, performance, and arrangement were soon recognized. His band backed Israel's leading male singer, Arik Einstein, earning him acclaim as a professional composer. Amid this success, he toured extensively with his own band, developing a sound embodied in this work: a fusion of Israeli folk songs (drawing from both Jewish and Arab cultural traditions) and modal jazz. What's noteworthy is how he crafted a modal/spiritual jazz sound that, while firmly rooted in authentic Arabic melodies, avoids any earthy or raw quality. At the time, while popular jazz was indeed making its way into Israel, works in this particular style were virtually nonexistent. It's easy to see why this album is called "Israel's first modern jazz work" (Albert was able to achieve this precisely because he studied under Mel Keller, an American clarinetist who had immigrated to Israel at the time). The charming piano phrases of the striking "01. Mezare Israel Yekabtzenu" take a sudden turn from its intro, delivering a solid rhythm that makes this incredibly cool track truly breathtaking. The thrilling modal jazz of "03. Sha Shtil Harabbi Ba," the distinctly Arabic spiritual jazz of "04. Ala Dal'ona," the melancholy ballad "05. Ken Yovdu Kol Oyvecha," and culminating in the hauntingly beautiful modal jazz masterpiece "06. Hamichtav"—a track that seems to imbue this work with eternal brilliance—the unique worldview that runs through the entire album is gentle yet profound, deeply moving... This truly hidden gem, known only to those in the know, is finally getting an official reissue. This paper sleeve faithfully recreates the cover of the legendary original pressing (now reportedly trading for over 1000 euros). The sound, meticulously remastered from the master tape, makes this a truly satisfying release. Above all, it's a masterpiece meant to be savored—immerse yourself in its wonderfully deep and beautiful soundscape before overthinking anything.

Tracklisting:

1.Mezare Israel Yekabtzenu
2.Rabbi Elimelech
3.Sha Shtil Harabbi Ba
4.Ala Dal' ona
5.Ken Yovdu Kol Oyvecha
6.Hamichtav
