The Kabaneri are a group of immortal monsters that have been invading the world since the Industrial Revolution, when the modern world was about to be transformed into the modern world. It is said that it will not perish unless its heart, which is covered with a steel coating, is shot through, and that those bitten by it will die and then come back to life and attack others. The monsters, which later came to be known as kabanes, multiplied explosively and covered the entire world. The people of the Far Eastern island nation of Hinomoto managed to survive by building fortresses called "stations" in various parts of the country and shutting themselves away in them in order to counter the threat of the Kabanes. Only armored steam locomotives (known as "hayajiro") could come and go between stations, and the stations managed to survive by supplying each other with their respective products. Ikoma, a boy steam smith, lives in Araganeki Station, where iron manufacturing and steam engine production are the mainstay of life. He is developing his own weapon, the "Tsuranuki Tsutsu," to defeat the Kabane, and longs for the day when he will be able to demonstrate his power.Then one day, one of the Haya-Jo, the Kou-Tetsu-Jo, arrives at Aragane Station after passing through the front line. Ikoma is sent to clean and maintain the train cars and sees a mysterious girl who is exempted from the mandatory Kabane censorship. That night, while Ikoma is reunited with the girl from the daytime who calls herself Mumei, a runaway Hayajiro rushes into Aragane Station. The entire crew has been wiped out and turned into cabanes! Kabanes overflowed into Kekane Station. Ikoma runs against the wave of panic-stricken people.
