Naturally, the performance uses Piazzolla’s own handwritten scores. For the guitar duo masterpiece, “Tango Suite,” Suzuki himself performed both parts using multitrack recording. Having performed with nearly ten different partners in the past, he has mastered both parts—and as a result, he has successfully drawn out a new charm from this work that he discovered only through that experience. In “The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires,” arranged by Sergio Assad, Suzuki has engaged with the guitar techniques of Argentine tango musicians to create a world of richness and depth unique to the guitar solo. This recording is framed by two versions of “Adiós Nonino,” dedicated to the 20th anniversary of Piazzolla’s passing and to Suzuki’s own father, who was a devoted tango enthusiast. He performs as a guitar solo the piano cadenza placed at the beginning of Piazzolla’s 1961 arrangement of “Adiós Nonino,” giving birth to a new, heartfelt repertoire. The other “Adiós Nonino,” which brings the album to a close, is an arrangement by Argentine guitarist Rubén Luis.
