Asahina's final Bruckner cycle, begun in autumn 2000 and running through September 2001, gathers all five symphonies in a 7-disc set.\nNewly remastered from the DSD masters for this edition, with the original notes by Koho Uno for each release.\n\nAll five performances represent the summit of this conductor's art, and the Ninth, which brought the cycle to a close, was set down just three months before his death - a true final testament. Bruckner was the repertoire to which Asahina devoted his entire life, and this set preserves its closing chapter. The booklet contains a new introductory essay by Kotaro Yamazaki together with the complete original performance and work commentaries by Koho Uno from the first releases, while the sound itself has been reworked using the 2019 remastering by Tomoyoshi Ezaki of Octavia Records, producer of the original sessions. Discographical material including Asahina's complete Bruckner performance record is also included. This reissue forms the final chapter of our programme marking the 110th and 111th anniversaries of Asahina's birth.\n\nThis final Bruckner series was recorded live by Octavia Records in Asahina's very last years, and met with a tremendous response and outstanding reviews on first release. The Eighth won a Bronze Award at the 2002 Record Academy Awards, and the performances have earned a permanent place in the history of recording in Japan. The Ninth of 24 September 2001, given roughly three months before his death, can genuinely be called his musical bequest: it carries the weight of a final summing-up, and given that the Ninth was also the first Bruckner symphony he ever conducted (on 26 February 1954, with the Kansai Symphony Orchestra), it is a deeply moving document for anyone tracing the career of Japan's greatest Bruckner conductor. The other four performances, conceived on a vast scale, are equally products of this late period - rare readings in which Bruckner's essential musical nature is given full expression.
