Performed with the strong sense of national character unique to the Russian pianist Ashkenazy, the work features an exhilarating sense of rhythm and a brilliant, majestic final movement—all evoking a sense of nostalgia for Ukraine. On the B-side, Ashkenazy reveals his side as a pianist, performing Tchaikovsky’s rare piano piece, “Memories of Hapsal.” Composed of three movements, this work features the third movement, “Song Without Words,” a masterpiece that was also arranged for violin by Kreisler. Here, you can hear the rare pianism of Ashkenazy, who no longer performs publicly as a pianist. Although it is a short piece, Ashkenazy’s performance, as a Russian pianist, is filled with affection and warmth.
