He began playing the violin at age 5 under the guidance of his father, Naomichi. In 1961, he entered the Tokyo University of the Arts, where he studied under Professors Tatsuo Usatsuka, H. Horst, and W. Hanke.\nHe went on to graduate school, where he thoroughly mastered the fundamentals of the German school of violin performance, from J. Joachim to K. Frisch and A. Busch. It was there that he met Yoshiko Hattori, who would later become his lifelong partner, and the two competed with each other for top honors. At that time, the renowned German conductor Josef Keilberth visited Professor Hacken’s class and was deeply impressed by the playing of Okayama, then a student. He praised him highly, saying, “You have talent. If you study in Germany, you will surely succeed.” In 1968, the couple went to study at the Hamburg State University of Music as scholarship students sponsored by the West German government. There, he once again studied violin under Professor Hacken and chamber music under Professor E. Hauptmann. During this time, W.
