Since taking office as the 21st Kapellmeister of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra in February 2018, his reputation has continued to soar.\nThis video features a concert held in Leipzig in May 2019. The orchestra and Nelsons, along with guest violinist Baiba Skride, performed the same program on a tour of Japan in late May 2019, making this footage from the concert just before their arrival in Japan.\nBoth Skride and Nelsons are from Latvia. They are longtime friends who studied at the same music school and have frequently performed Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1 together. Shostakovich’s two violin concertos were written for the virtuoso Oistrakh and premiered in 1955 by Oistrakh with the Leningrad Philharmonic, conducted by Mravinsky. Although these are challenging works that demand great expressiveness and compositional skill, Skride—who has recorded them before—has them completely under control.\nTchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony is part of his repertoire, which he has already recorded with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.
