2017 Leipzig Bach Festival Live Mass in B minor by Blomstedt Live video from the 2017 Leipzig Bach Festival. Leipzig is associated with J.S. Bach, who from 1723 until his death in 1750 was the Thomas Cantor in charge of the choir and worship music at St. Thomas Church. The festival began in 1904 to coincide with the founding of the New Bach Society, and each year has a different theme. The festival begins with an opening concert conducted by Thomas Cantor, and around 100 events are held throughout the city. The final concert is traditionally a performance of the "Mass in B minor" in St. Thomas' Church; 2017 featured Herbert Blomstedt, long-time Kapellmeister of the Gewandhaus Orchestra. Blomstedt took the same stage in 2005 for the concert that marked the end of his tenure, and his performance there is a story to be told.(The same performance is available on DVD and BD from EUROARTS, 20.54518/20.59234.) The performance is a masterful one that shows how well Blomstedt has been performing in recent years, as in the famous performance of 12 years ago. And then there is Christina Landscharmer, with her elongated voice. Mezzo Elisabet Kuhlmann has an overwhelming presence and rich expressiveness on stage. The clear tenor Wolfram Radtke.
