The iconic composers featured on this album—such as Camille Saint-Saëns, Claude Debussy, and members of the Group of Six—contributed significantly to this success. Their aesthetic tendencies differed; for example, Saint-Saëns—who founded the “National Music Society” after France’s defeat in the Franco-Prussian War with the aim of promoting his country’s music—vehemently rejected the Group of Six decades later, he did agree with his younger colleagues on the need to break away from the bombastic, Wagnerian melancholy of late Romantic music.
