Schuncke

Description:

This album brings together piano works composed around the same time by three genius composers born in 1810: Burgmüller, Schunke, and Schumann. Norbert Burgmüller (1810–1836), the younger brother of Johann Burgmüller—famous for his etudes—and Ludwig Schünke (1810–1834), a close friend of Schumann’s, were both prodigies who died young, and Schumann lamented their untimely deaths. Regarding Burgmüller’s *Rhapsody*, Schumann remarked, “It has the same effect on me as I first felt when reading Goethe’s *The Erl-King*,” “It is like a vision from another world,” and he also praised Schunk’s Grand Sonata (dedicated to Schumann) highly, dedicating his *Toccata* to Schunk in return. This album reflects the “youth of Romanticism” in two senses: the first heyday of German Romanticism in the 1830s and the figures of these young composers.

Megumi Sano enrolled at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels and later honed her skills at the Cologne University of Music, winning prizes at the Tenuto Music Competition (Belgium) and the Senegalaria International Competition (Italy), among others. The booklet accompanying this album features a comprehensive commentary in Japanese.
Tokyo M Plus
