This can be heard on their debut album, “Schumann: String Quartet No. 1 (OC711).”\nThis album, serving as the culmination of the Year of Haydn, features (2) works that established the Viennese Classical style: the famous “Sunrise” from Haydn’s greatest masterpiece, the String Quartet Op. 76, which achieves a sublime synthesis of musical elements. (3) is a work that can be viewed as a development of the harpsichord-accompanied divertimento style; since it was composed with a sense of chamber music unity rather than as a piano concerto, it is performed here by a string quartet with piano. (4) appears to have been published in the 1766 Breitkopf edition in Leipzig, but was omitted from the 1937 Bärenreiter edition as a mysterious work or forgery. Here, Gilles Appap, the “unconventional violinist” who made headlines during the summer of 2006 in Tokyo, appears alongside members of the Delian Quartet to delight audiences with performances that transcend conventional boundaries.
