He studied at the University of Cambridge, the Royal Academy of Music in London, and the National Opera Studio. In 1984, he founded the St. James’s Baroque Players; he served as music director of the English Touring Opera (1991–92), Music Director of the Grandborn Touring Opera (1992–97), and Principal Conductor of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra (1994–96). He made his debuts at major opera houses such as the Bavarian State Opera (1994), the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden (1995), and has appeared as a guest conductor at opera houses in Buenos Aires, Bologna, Florence, Paris, and Brussels, as well as at music festivals such as Glyndebourne and Salzburg. He is a frequent guest conductor at the Bavarian State Opera, where he has received rave reviews. Beginning with the 2004–05 season, he succeeded Suddarth as chief conductor of the Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra. In September 2005, he made his first visit to Japan, accompanying Zubin Mehta on the Bavarian State Opera’s tour of Japan, where he conducted Handel’s *Ariodante* (directed by David Alden) to great acclaim.\n\nThis CD is the third installment in the Bruckner cycle by the Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra—an ensemble with a proud tradition—and Ivo Bolton, who has served as its chief conductor since 2004, featuring Bruckner’s Symphony No. 9! This is a cycle that Bolton, upon assuming the role of principal conductor, ambitiously (or perhaps overambitiously?) launched as part of the orchestra’s regular concert series; it is a live recording from the Salzburg Festival Grand Theater. Leveraging his experience in Baroque performance (he has also guest-conducted the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, among others), Bolton has incorporated the achievements of period instrument performance into his approach. Highly acclaimed for his exceptionally clear, lucid, and tightly focused modern interpretations, Bolton has utilized the functionality and instrumentation of the Mozarteum Orchestra to present a fresh perspective on Bruckner’s works—and this album showcases the results of that endeavor. Although the Ninth Symphony is unfinished, it demonstrates a high degree of artistic maturity and remains a highly popular work.
