While his true strength lies, of course, in opera, listening to his orchestral recordings on the DREYER-GAIDO label reveals him to be an astonishingly—and perhaps even fearsome—conductor with a highly distinctive style.\n“The general ‘Mahler Renaissance’ that began in the early 1960s is not due to Bernstein’s achievements”—the liner notes are provocative from the start, but the performance itself is not the abnormally slow, ponderous rendition one might initially expect. That said, the weightiness of the performance is considerable. At times it feels like pulling a cart through mud, and at other times he pulls the music along with outstanding rhythmic drive. While the liner notes cite musical examples to support this, I have to tip my hat to his big-name confidence in the final sentence, where he defiantly states, “Interpretation is always subjective.” What’s more, this duo is determined to complete the entire Mahler cycle within the next two or three years. After all, isn’t the very fact that they’re launching with *Songs of the Night* proof that they’re no ordinary performers?
