This is the best. Cologne, Germany-based Muito Kabala's new album is a smooth, contemporary alternative Afro-jazz ensemble, and the first track, "Like A River," is a flowing groove that leans into the river theme of its title. The organic and percussive bass clarinet line, highlife-inspired guitar, quiet but emotional vocals, and occasional rainbow-like synthesizers are all top notch. The most comfortable soundscapes of the moment are "Like A River Part II," which dips into psychedelia swirling around a 12/8 groove; "Carry Me," which combines full-bodied synth soundscapes with an intoxicating horn arrangement; and "The Rise and Fall," which features Belgian-Congolese vocalist The band features Belgian-Congolese vocalist Rainer Bakolé, who steps into the world of future soul on "Let Go" and "All This While," all of which are excellent.
