Tony Allen 、 Hugh Masekela
Description:
Hugh Masekela, South Africa's leading jazz trumpeter, and Tony Allen, founder of Afrobeat. This album, REJOICE, is the first posthumous release for Masekela, who passed away in January 2018. Hugh Masekela and Tony Allen met in the 1970s through their connection with Fela Kuti. Since then, the two had been talking for decades about the possibility of making an album together. In 2010, when their UK touring schedules overlapped, they saw this as a perfect opportunity to record together with producer Nick Gold (also founder of the World Circuit Label). The material recorded at this time remained in storage for many years until Masekela's death in 2018. Tony Allen and Nick Gold unearthed the recordings and completed them as an album in the summer of 2019 at the same London studio where the original recordings were made.In addition to Allen and Masekela, the album features a new generation of musicians from the jazz and new generation of musicians active in the jazz and Afrobeat scene, such as Mutale Chasi (Kokoroko) and Steve Williamson. The meeting of these two giants of the African music scene is, in Allen's words, "a mixture of South African and Nigerian elements, a jumble of swing and jazz. The "Agbada Bougou," with its parallel harmonizing horns and multiplying drums, is impressive; "Coconut Jam," with its swinging percussion and lively brass, uplifts the listener; and "Obama," with its fast-moving snare drum that creates a sense of movement. The "Obama Suffle Blues," with its fast-moving snare drums, will give you a sense of the energy of the band's music. (1/2)
