He has recorded, toured, and composed with Steve Miller, Daryl Hall, Prince, George Benson, Oretta Adams, Kenny Loggins, Morris Day \u0026amp; The Time, and others. He continues to be at the forefront of funk rock incorporating elements of synth-pop and new wave—the so-called “Minneapolis Sound” that gained popularity in Prince’s circle.\nThis album is his fifth as a bandleader and his debut release on Leopard Records. Featuring Eric Gales on guitar, the album ranges from the title track “Break On Free”—which packs a Prince\/James Brown-style punch—to “I Couldn’t Do It Without You,” which features Eric Rees, who played saxophone in Prince’s band, the power ballad “Beauty Beyond the Darkness,” the metallic funk rock track “Big City,” and the tender ode to his wife, “Song for Julie (Forever I’ll Love You)—the album boasts a wide range of tracks.
