Description:
The long-awaited reissue of the only album by The Jazz Epistles, South Africa's first bebop-style jazz group with Dollar Brand and Hugh Masekela! ! The Jazz Epistles are known as the first South African group to make the early transition from the swing jazz style popular in the 50's to bebop. The members are a sextet of strong personalities, including Darrah Brand on piano and Hugh Masekela on trumpet. The style of the group, which was influenced by Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, is exactly the cutting-edge American jazz of the time. This is the first and last album they released in 1959, just before disbanding. This was also the first jazz album by a black South African, but it was also referenced as a cultural manifesto as part of the anti-apartheid struggle. We hope you will listen to this jazz from the original South Africa, which became the source of Cape jazz.
