From 1912 to 1924, he studied piano under Bartók and composition under Kodály at the Liszt Academy of Music. His music is influenced by the traditional styles of Hungarian folk music. For this project, Amaryllis Q. has recorded the world’s first recording of Gesa Fried’s four string quartets.\nThe Third Quartet, “Fantasia Tropica”—which also serves as the album’s title—depicts a tropical day, with each movement bearing a subtitle: the first movement, “la Sera” (evening), the second movement “la Notte” (Night), the third movement “il Giorno” (Day), and the fourth movement “la Sera” (Evening). The second and third movements incorporate references to Indonesian folk music.\nAmarilis Quartet studied at the Basel Conservatory under Walter Levin of the LaSalle Quartet and the Alban Berg Quartet. This young German-Swiss string quartet focuses on rediscovering forgotten composers and performing works by contemporary composers, and has appeared at numerous music festivals.
