A colleague and ally of Mravinsky. Although he lived in the same era as Mravinsky, he was a master conductor whose recordings have been scarce. This No. 8 is also his first appearance in the repertoire. The orchestra is the former East Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, with whom Mravinsky made repeated guest appearances. At first hearing, it is extremely profound, as if Shostakovich were conducted by a German, which is an odd description. The slow tempo of this masterful performance is like a big river that moves forward slowly and deliberately. This is the long-awaited release that Mr. Maris has readily consented to.
