This 5CD collection of rare live recordings of the German tenor Horst Wolff (1894-1980) is probably little known in Japan, but he was a tenor based at the Dessau Theater in Germany for a long time, especially in the roles of Wagner's heroes. However, he did not perform in many big cities, and his prime years in his late 40s coincided with World War II, and after the war, Dessau became an East German territory, so he did not gain international recognition. Nevertheless, he was a very talented singer, and the people of Dessau loved him, and he continued to perform on stage until 1957. From the mid-1950s, Wolff began recording his own performances on tape recorder, and with the exception of the \"Masked Ball\" from 1936, the recordings included here are all from those recordings. Many of these tapes were destroyed in a fire in 1980, and the remaining ones were unplayable, but in recent years some of them have been restored and made playable, thus making them available on CD. Along with Wolff's singing voice, the CD also provides a valuable glimpse into the performance activities of the Dessau Theater, which was once known as one of the most famous regional theaters in Germany.
