A great pasticcio on the subject of Hercules! A very interesting CD has just appeared. Two great composers born in the same year, Handel and Bach, have combined two works based on common material. The subject matter of \"The Choice of Hercules,\" in which the young hero Hercules is guided in his path by pleasure and virtue and decides to go for virtue in spite of the difficulties that lie ahead, is very popular and has been the subject of several masterpieces of painting. Bach premiered his celebratory cantata \"Let us be mindful (a.k.a. Hercules at the crossroads)\" in 1733, and Handel premiered \"The Choice of Hercules\" in 1751. Incidentally, Bach's work is also famous for being converted into a Christmas oratorio. Most of the pieces from these two works have been cleverly arranged into a single work in this performance. This kind of pasticcio (=pie) was quite common at that time. The German and English are interchanged, and there are two virtuosi, a soprano and a tenor. It is as if these two great composers, whose birthdays are only 26 days apart and whose fabrics are only 130 km apart in a straight line, have finally met in this work, even though they have never met in their lives. This CD is a good way to experience the difference between the two composers' styles, and it is also enjoyable to listen to without prior knowledge of either of them. Clemens Frömich, a conductor well versed in both Bach and Handel, conducts the orchestra of the Handel Festival in Halle and brings the works together beautifully. Kasper Krainer of Hercules is a young German countertenor. He has rapidly made a name for himself in recent years, and this is his first recording in a leading role. Christina Rotterberg of Pleasure is a Dresden-born soprano from the RIAS Chamber Choir, and is very active as an old music soprano. The virtuoso Zuzanne Langner was also born in Dresden and comes from the RIAS Chamber Choir. She won the Audience Prize and the Special Prize at the International Bach Competition in Leipzig in 2004.
