To commemorate this occasion, the QUERSTAND label—based near Leipzig, a city closely associated with Mendelssohn—has decided to release the “Mendelssohn Anthology,” a 10-volume series. While some tracks—such as readings of letters and biographical texts—may be a bit challenging, this promises to be a valuable anthology offering the chance to hear rare works by Mendelssohn and his contemporaries.\n\nThe performers, Renert and Hemken, were long-time members of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. The fact that they selected the works included here underscores the immense significance of Danz and Beermann to the basset horn. In particular, the Beermann family—Karl Beermann, a clarinetist and basset horn player, and his son Henrik Beermann, who was also a composer—shared a very close artistic bond with Mendelssohn, and there is no doubt that they influenced each other’s musicality. Renert states, “It is well known that Mendelssohn exerted a powerful influence over the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra during his many years as its conductor, but it does not end there; it may come as a surprise to some, but Mendelssohn’s spirit still lives on in this orchestra. “To commemorate the 200th anniversary of Mendelssohn’s birth, it is important to make this year a wonderful ‘Year of Musical Celebration,’” he said.
