The 11th installment features performances by Karl Schuricht, including Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 27 with Kasadosh and Brahms’ Symphony No. 2. Schuricht, who passed away in Switzerland on January 7, 1967, marked the 50th anniversary of his death in 2017. Schuricht, one of Germany’s greatest conductors, made his debut with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande in 1943 and, in 1944—amid World War II—moved to Switzerland as the war situation worsened. Schuricht, who had been a guest conductor with prestigious orchestras since before the war, had a particularly deep connection with the Vienna Philharmonic; in 1960, he was awarded the title of “Honorary Member of the Vienna Philharmonic.”
This recording consists of live performances from the Lucerne Festival in 1961 and 1962. The first piece is Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 27, featuring the renowned French pianist Robert Casadesus as soloist. Casadesus was renowned as a master of Mozart, and his recording of this concerto with the Columbia Symphony Orchestra, conducted by George Szell (recorded in 1962), is considered a classic. Casadesus was actively engaged in recording and performing Mozart’s works during this period; in fact, just after this live performance in Lucerne, on August 23, 1961, he performed the same piece in Salzburg with the Vienna Philharmonic under the baton of Schuricht. Kasadosh’s characteristic refined and beautiful touch and interpretive style shine in this performance of Mozart as well. The second track, Brahms’ Symphony No. 2, is also a major highlight. Carefully crafted on the basis of an immense bond of trust with the Vienna Philharmonic, this performance is truly powerful—just as it was in Schuricht’s live concert. In addition to the superb performance, the magnificent restoration by the audite label is also noteworthy; though recorded in monaural, the sound quality has been revived with remarkable clarity.
King International

Tracklisting:

1.Piano Concerto in B-flat major, K. 595: I.
