Consequently, in 1950s Germany—where the work would have been met with little acceptance—Fritschay was virtually the only conductor to take up *Stabat Mater* early on and perform it frequently. Fritschay also recorded the work during studio sessions held from September 16 to 19, 1954.\nThis live performance, which took place at roughly the same time as the studio recording, features the exact same cast—from soloists such as Stader and Heflinger to the chorus. While Fritschay’s approach here does not obscure the text’s meaning, he does opt for a relatively brisk tempo. As is evident from his acclaimed album of overtures—widely regarded as a classic—his performance not only showcases the beauty of precise intonation and lively rhythms but also demonstrates that this work is more than just a collection of solo numbers that sound impressive against a heroic orchestral backdrop.
