Bach’s keyboard works with a diverse array of period instruments. The word “tasto” in the ensemble’s name refers to a keyboard or frets, and the group performs with a unique lineup centered on stringed instruments with keyboards (such as the nyckelharpa and the hardanger fiddle).\n\nThe “alchemy” that serves as the theme of this work is an attempt to transform simple inventions and keyboard pieces—originally written for educational purposes—into “basic building blocks,” and by combining them with the timbres of entirely new instruments, to create a rich, unknown resonance (gold).\nThe “nyckelharpa” (formerly known in German as the “Schlüsselfiedel”), which takes center stage here, is a stringed instrument with a keyboard that was widely loved throughout Europe in the Middle Ages. However, it had already disappeared from the German-speaking world during the High Baroque period when Bach was active, and today it is known only as a traditional Swedish instrument. Here, three nyckelharpas—ranging from soprano to bass—overlap to create a rich, dense string sound that makes full use of their sympathetic strings.\nFurthermore, the “kannel,” a traditional Estonian plucked string instrument, is innovatively employed as both a solo instrument and a basso continuo.
