While Jānsons has garnered significant attention for his large-scale, passionate interpretations of Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich, Strauss is another composer to whom he devotes considerable attention. Indeed, the two previous albums on which Nelsons conducted the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra—2009’s *A Hero’s Life* and the *Rosenkavalier* Suite (recorded in 2009), as well as *Alpine Symphony* and *Dances from *Salome*** (recorded in 2010), made a powerful impact with their dramatic, dynamic musical interpretations. Furthermore, with the Berlin Philharmonic—where Nelsons has made frequent guest appearances since the fall of 2010—he conducted the “Der Rosenkavalier Suite” in 2011 and “A Hero’s Life” in 2012; at the 2011 Lucerne Festival, he conducted the Concertgebouw Orchestra—which has also become a regular partner—in a performance of “The Dance from *Salome*.” Furthermore, he is scheduled to present a complete concert performance of *Salome* this May with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, where he will assume the position of music director beginning in the 2014–15 season. The three symphonic poems featured here—all popular for their intricate, Strauss-esque orchestration—suggest that the flexible, ever-deepening relationship between the performers has reached an ideal form. All tracks were recorded over a schedule spanning two live recording days and one day of patch sessions, and once again, the stunningly excellent sound quality is the greatest delight of this release.
