While the Second Concerto tends to be overshadowed by the splendor of the First, its intricate melodies emerge with remarkable effectiveness at key moments. Her collaborator, Andris Nelsons, is a young conductor (28 years old as of 2006) born into a musical family in Riga, the capital of Latvia. He has served as principal conductor of the Latvian National Opera since 2003 and assumed the position of music director of the Northwest German Philharmonic Orchestra beginning with the 2006–07 season.
