The series has consistently been characterized by an intellectual and lucid approach, while also skillfully bringing out the composer’s characteristic cynical edge. To date, five symphonies—Nos. 1, 4, 6, 9, and 15—have been released.\nThe newly released Symphony No. 5, like the previous releases of Nos. 1 and 6, is a live recording from 2011. As the Fifth Symphony is not only Shostakovich’s most famous work but is already regarded as a masterpiece and a 20th-century classic, this is a piece on which he naturally places great emphasis—yet this is Boreyko; he never wavers from his usual composed demeanor.\nHere, Boreyko generally adopts a slower tempo. With a total running time of 49 minutes, the performance is characterized by a grand, masterful musical presentation.
