The viola d’amore is an instrument used primarily during the Baroque period of the late 17th century, featuring six or seven playing strings and an equal number of resonating strings. Hindemith brought this instrument—which had all but disappeared from 20th-century compositions—back into the spotlight.\nThis album features Hindemith’s “Little Sonata for Viola d’amore” and “Chamber Music No. 6” as its main works, along with Biber’s “Artistic and Amusing Ensemble,” for which Hindemith added a basso continuo part, and a viola d’amore sonata by Stamitz. These arrangements are a testament to Hindemith’s profound understanding of the instrument’s characteristics.\nThe performer is Günter Teufel. Teufel served as principal violist of the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra for many years, beginning in 1982, and since 2000 has been a professor at the Stuttgart University of Music and Performing Arts, where he is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of musicians.
