The violin-and-cello combination allows an exceptionally wide compass, and offers a unity and cohesion peculiar to strings that a piano cannot provide.\n* Kodály's Duo for violin and cello Op. 7 is surely the best known of these works. Next comes Mátyás Seiber, who studied with Kodály in Budapest and left a body of work incorporating jazz elements. Ligeti, the leading Hungarian composer of the modern era, celebrated his 90th anniversary year in 2013; the Hommage à Hilding Rosenberg included here is a much-loved piece, famously championed by the Arditti Quartet. Zoltán Székely was a friend of Bartók and first violinist of the Hungarian String Quartet, and it was he who made the popular arrangement of Bartók's Romanian Folk Dances for violin and piano.\n* Not everything here was originally written for violin and cello, but the disc offers a chance to encounter the Hungarian composers who shaped the twentieth century, from Kodály through Bartók to Ligeti - and it is also a landmark album that broadens the appeal and the possibilities of the duo medium.\n* Friedemann Eichhorn was born in Germany in 1971, an accomplished player whose recordings for Hänssler include Liszt's works for violin and piano (98 588) and Piazzolla tango albums (93 205, 98 508). Alexander Hülshoff, born in Germany in 1969, is a professor at the Folkwang University of the Arts and is active above all in chamber music.
