The generous programme centres on shorter pieces from Rossini's song collection Péchés de vieillesse, with famous operatic arias from Otello, L'italiana in Algeri and elsewhere included as well. Horne was also celebrated as Saint-Saëns's Dalila and Bizet's Carmen, but Rossini remains her calling card above all. Her distinctive singing, for which \"steely\" is the perfect epithet, has always divided opinion, yet alongside Joan Sutherland she was one of the driving forces of the bel canto revival and established herself unassailably among the world's leading mezzo-sopranos. Rock-solid security across the whole range, superb coloratura technique, a lustrous and unflinching tone: Horne was already 58 at the time of this concert, and to that powerful voice she now adds an even riper expressive maturity in singing of great beauty.\n\n[Marilyn Horne]\nOne of the twentieth century's outstanding mezzo-sopranos, Horne dominated the opera world from the 1960s to the early 1970s and remained at the very top of the profession until her retirement in 1998. She was known for a broad repertoire stretching from Bach to Berg. After studying with the great soprano Lotte Lehmann she made her debut in 1954, and in the same year came to sudden prominence by providing the singing voice for the title character in the film musical Carmen Jones. Her success as Sutherland's partner in Beatrice di Tenda at Carnegie Hall in 1961 sealed her reputation.
