This is a must for fans of Brahms' Violin Concerto, and happily, it is a stereo recording. Francescatti recorded the Brahms Violin Concerto with the Philadelphia Orchestra under Ormandy in 1956, live at the Salzburg Festival with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra under Mitropoulos in 1958, with the New York Philharmonic under Bernstein in 1961, and with the Rhinestone Philharmonic in 1969. In 1961, he made a session recording with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Bernstein, and in 1969, he made a live recording with the Orchestre National de Radio France conducted by Reinsdorf. The performance, which was realized in 1974 with the Southwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Bourg, is the latest recording of Francescatti's career, as he retired from performing in 1976. The fragrant tone and well-crafted singing show the depth of his love for the work. Serenade No. 2, conducted by Bourg, was recorded in 1978. The master conductor Boulle conducts this popular work from Brahms's early period with a unique pathos in the peaceful tunefulness of the music. Both recordings are in excellent condition.
